Mosselbaai

CT Baley swam at the 1920 South African Champiosnhips, representing Mossel Bay. The town of Mossel Bay - or Mosselbaai - is located on the coast about half way between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth. Other centres nearby include George, Plettenberg Bay and Oudtshoorn. There are a number of high schools in the area, including Punt Hoërskool and a Curro Private school. Laerskool Park is situated very near a popular swimming spot amongst the rocky coastline, known locally as Die Poort. (Below). The Mossel Bay Surf Lifeaving club is located at Diaz Beach (bottom and a few swimming clubs, notably the Fish Eagle Aquatic club, which combined with clubs from the other centes in 1999.


 

MOSSELBAAI NUUS - 25 January 2013

Met die heerlike somerweer, is Mosselbaai se gunsteling swemplek, Die Poort, steeds die plek om te gaan lafenis soek. 

Die geboutjie in die meegaande foto, waarvan die dak regs uit-steek, was die eerste kleedkamers en was van sink gemaak. Op 'n stormagtige dag het die see die geboutjie doodeenvoudig weggevee en net die betonvloer het oorgebly. 

Destyds was die ketting, voetpaadjies en die duikplank reeds daar, maar geen restaurant nie. Deesdae is die betonvloer 'n gewilde plek onder sonbaaiers. 

Bo-op die krans, kan 'n driepoot net-net in die foto gesien word. Dit is gebruik om klip wat in die groewe bo-op die kop gemyn is, te laat sak na die koekepanne onder. 'n Deel van die klipvoetstuk is steeds daar bo te sien. 

Die eerste klipgeboue in die dorp se klip is reg teen die see gemyn, deesdae 'n gewilde hengelplek. Die groewe wat met hammer en bytel in 'n reguit lyn in die klip gekap is, is steeds vaagweg sigbaar. 'n Hout pen is dan hier ingekap, wat swel as die gety oor die rotse spoel en sodoende die klip in netjiese blokke lewer.

Note that all the swimmers men, as it was improper desjare for men and women to swim together. 

According to tradition, the swemtye for the sexes is indicated by means of the hoisting of a particular flag. The women never complained as the men they spy, though men made objected that the women themselves with binoculars from the St Blaize Cave watched. 

Women, after all, had no reason to complain because they bathing costumes from the wrist to the ankle covered and full of frills, while the men's of was made a sticky knit.
