1952 Cape Town

1952 was a momentous year for South African swimming. 6 Springbok swimmers, including East London schoolgirl Joan Harrison swam in the Helsinki Olympic Games. Joan won a gold medal in the women's 110 yards backstroke! This was the first swimming gold medal won by a South African. 


The Springbok waterpolo team also competed, winning a number of games.

10 Febraury 1952 - Dennis Ford wins all 5 freestyle events at the Transvaal championships held at the Wits pool.

March 30, 1952. Peter Pirow sets a new South African record for 220 yards freetyle at University of Witwatersrand gala. He also wins the 110 yards breaststroke and 150 yds medley.
