Stillwater Lifesaving

Many Springbok swimmers - Blackbeard, Lamont, Fritsch, McCarney - stayed on after nationals concluded on Saturday, to compete in the lifesaving championships also held at the Newlands pool the next day. During the 1980's south Africa competed in a number of overseas events, while Springboks held a number of lifesaving world records. Lifesaving in South Africa started in 1911, and in 1913 Sir William Henry, the founder of the Royal Life Saving Society visited South Africa. In 1961 when South Africa broke away from the Commonwealth and formed the South African Life Saving Society (SALS) with its first Headquarters in Johannesburg. In 2003 the still water and surf lifesaving bodies were amalgamated into Lifesaving South Africa.

In August 1982, a South African lifesaving team competed against Austria, Federal Republic of Germany and Italy in Austria.

Annual reports of the Eastern Province Lifesaving Society - 1958, 1959 and 1960. Both still water and surf life saving is mentioned - including the number of awards. In 1958 Kings Beach Surf Lifesaving club hosted the South African Championships - and won the event.


In 1958 Captain E Hale, Secretary of the Royal Lifesaving Society visited South Africa. This was the first visit to the country since William Henry visited in 1913. Local swimming coach Francis Horn played an important role, and was for many years the lifesaving coach at Grey High School in Port Elizabeth.

Triple Springbok Paul Blackbeard received a medal from Condesa de Lacambra after breaking the world record in the 200m obstacle race during an event in Barcelona, Spain.


 

Annette Cowley sets two world records in lifesaving at the 1983 SA Championships, while Stuart Cromarty also sets a new world record, breaking Paul Blackbeard's 200m obstacle race record set in 1976.

DF Malan Hoërskool - 2013 - Rudolf Visser het Saterdag na die Winterspele in Duitsland vertrek, waar hy as lid van Suid-Afrika se Proteaspan sal deelneem. Ons wens hom en die ander lewensredders baie sterkte toe.


13maart, 2013 - Vrystaatse lewensredders

Die Vrystaatse Lewensreddingspan het weer uitstekend gevaar op die Suid-Afrikaanse Lewensredding-kampioenskappe wat by die Strand en die Theewaterskloof-dam in die Kaap plaasgevind het. Die Vrystaters het onder leiding van hul kapteine, Tinus Krugel en Stefani Boshoff, bykans 100 medaljes verower. Dit sluit 29 goue, 28 silwer- en 36 bronsmedaljes in.

Van die Vrysaters wat in hul ouderdomsgroep uitgeblink het, is: Chloe le Roux (Victrix Ludorum), Ferdinand Vergottini (Victor Ludorum) en Robbie le Roux (Victor Ludorum).  Vrystaters wat tussen hulle agt nasionale rekords verbeter het, is: Chloe le Roux, Guilma Lausberg, Ferdinand Vergottini, Robbie le Roux, Wesley Schutte, Culien van der Merwe en Adriaan Crous.

Vrystaters onder die top-drie lewensredders in Suid-Afrika in hul ouderdomsgroepe se ranglys, is: Chloe le Roux (1), Francois du Plessis (3), Guilma Lausberg (2), Robbie le Roux (1), Burger Marais (3), Stephen Pretorius (3), Alex-Jade Marshoff (3), Wesley Schutte (3), Ferdinand Vergottini (1), Culien van der Merwe (2), Gean Viljoen (3) en Chantel Smith (3). 
Swemmers van verskeie skole in Bloemfontein en Kroonstad, Meisieskool Oranje, Hoërskool Sentraal, Laerskool Willem Postma, Grey Kollege, Afrikaanse Hoërskool en Hoërskool Kroonstad, Sentrale Volkskool en die laerskole Kroonheuwel en Kroonstad was lede van die Vrystaatse span.

 


Regina van der Bout - Oos-Moot se swemorganiseerder is self ‘n swemmer van formaat en wys haar staal tydens die 2016 Suid-Afrikaanse Stilwater Lewensredding Kampioenskappe waar sy in die Meestersafdeling (30 tot 39 jaar) deelgeneem het.  Sy behaal 4 goue medaljes (200m hindernis, 50m kort “pop” [nuwe rekord], 100m “tow and tube” [nuwe rekord] en 100m “pop” met vinne [nuwe rekord]) behaal. Sy is ook die spanbestuurder van die Nipper-span wat algeheel derde by dié kampioenskappe eindig.
