The Grey school gala in Port Elizabeth was part of the Eastern Province Championships for many years, with the school boasting a long tradition of excellent swimmers like Geoff Grylls, Brian Elliot, Andre Kotze, Kobus Scheepers and world record holder Peter Williams, and Springbok diver Barry Birkett, while Open Water champion Mark Edge, who won the Redhouse River Mile in 1978, and held the Robben Island record for a time, was also a Springbok Surf lifesaving.

In 1956 the school built a 55 yard pool as part of its centenary celebrations, where generations of boys received lessons from men like Francis Horn and Tom Connell. For many years the school was closely associated with the PE Amateur swimming club, where many of the boys also played water polo.
